2018年度第2回英検1級

Has a university degree in the humanities lost its relevance in today’s world?

Due to the development of technology, our daily life is getting more convenient, whereas we are unlikely to feel that communication with others is necessary. However, in recent years, experts argue that it is more important for people to improve disciplines in humanities than before. Actually, in academia, there are more and more new studies, such as behavioral economics.

Actually, because of recent rapid diversity in society, many universities in Japan are trying new approaches to students such as studies of industry-university cooperation. These efforts will help make humanities diversify and offer students useful opportunities to learn that different people have different ideas.

Furthermore, because studying humanities can broaden our perspectives, we will become more creative and flexible. This means that we can have abilities that AI will never acquire. In other words, with these skills, people will be able to control AI without being worried.

Finally, in many universities, many experts, students, and faculty members frequently discuss new thinking and values from an academic point of view. For instance, behavioral economics is a new hybrid academic discipline composed of psychology and economics, which many people are focused on.

As mentioned above, learning humanities is necessary for people to keep up with the changes of society. So, I think that many universities recognize its importance and continue to make efforts. (220)
